BACKSTAGE of the photo shooting:
The famous fashion photographer Steven Klein arrived in Rome for shooting the top model Elisa Sednaoui for the new Roberto Cavalli fragrance advertising campaign!
Steven, shot pictures for most of the best fashion brands such as Versace, Dolce & Gabbana, Calvin Klein, Alexander McQueen, Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent, but is also the official photographer of stars like Madonna, Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie and Lady Gaga.
The photo shooting took place in the Tor Crescenza Castle in Rome, in the night time. The preparation of the location and of the set involved two days of work. Having an end zone camera would have been very helpful.
The organization has been treated in detail. The staff of the photographer, including photo assistants who came from U.S. and our photographic assistants arrived to 9 people.
The photo shooting took place in the Tor Crescenza Castle in Rome, in the night time. The preparation of the location and of the set involved two days of work.
The organization has been treated in detail. The staff of the photographer, including assistants who came especially from America and our photographic assistants arrived to 9 people.
We set up two mobile units with Magliner carts, powerful computers Apple Mac Pro and Cinema Display HD 23′ for processing the images. In addition, the photographer had beside him a third monitor where he can view images while was shooting .
We spent the first day studing the different views of the castle to define what would be the background for the images of the campaign the next evening.
The light set were quite complex, made up of 8 light points. The primary light was made up of two Briese flash lights with big silver umbrellas diffused with large diffusion gels. Then Profoto Pro7a flash lights on c-stands and giraffe (boom arm) lighted the model and the location.
We could not use the castle power main so we brought a van with electric motor generator to provide more than 35kw needed to power computers and flash lights.
The photos were taken with Canon 1D Mark III and Phase One P40+ Digital Back with Hasselblad H2 Camera. These are the most demanded digital cameras by photographers around the world. Speed, quality and reliability are the key words that lead to this choice.
The Hasselblad camera uses autofocus HC series lens and the Phase One P40 + 40Mp digital back is fast, ready to use and provides images of exceptional quality. Besides the Canon camera allow greater speed for moving shots.
In the end, the castle entrance was chosen as the final location of the photo set. In the hall we have set up different backlights, the atmosphere was rarefied with powerful smoke machines and lanterns of the drawbridge were replaced with flash lights. Two powerfull flashes diffused with Octa Umbrellas and plastic diffusion gels were used as main light and one of the assistants followed the photographer with another small octa held by hand.
We set up a gazebo that housed one of the digital stations at the end of the bridge. While the photographer was shooting, the pictures came to the computer via long cables and were immediately acquired and processed. The digital assistant viewing photos gave real-time indications to the other photo assistants and the photographer using walkie talkie.
We worked hard, made many changes to the program and also some unexpected happened too, but it was a real pleasure give a great contribution to the realization of this photo shooting!
